Many of these paintings were created during recovery after open-heart surgery and have a distinctive historical and/or political influence – at times, personal. New World Order addresses events during the first Gulf War, but, Cuyamaca represents a period in the early 1870’s in which Gould’s great-grandfather purchased Spanish land grants, including 4000 acres of Rancho Cuyamaca from Augustin Olvera.
